I help creatives figure out the technical stuff, so they can leave the marketing and strategy mapping to the expert. I specialize in marketing for photographers through search engine optimization, blog management, and consulting.
I’m always talking to small business owners about why they need a blog. A blog is a great way to drive more traffic to your website. Search engines like when your website has rich content and is consistently updated. However, many creatives think the blogging process ends when they hit Publish. In fact, marketing your blog posts is a key part of the process. More web users will find your content on Google if the post is already getting some traction. Here are my favorite
This one might be obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people skip this step! If you are posting recent work to your blog, let your client know when the post is live! I can guarantee you that they will be excited about the feature and will repost. Your client’s post is more likely to get lots of traffic since their followers are more personally invested in the content.
Publish a quick update on Facebook with a link to the blog post! The post preview is large on Facebook, so you’re more likely to get clicks here. The Facebook algorithm can be challenging – especially for business pages – so post to your personal page if you’re comfortable with that.
When it comes to how to drive traffic to a blog post, this might be my favorite! Pinterest has a huge audience and acts as a visual search engine. Check out my blog on how to use Pinterest for your business for a complete guide. You would be amazed at how powerful this tool can be to drive traffic to your blog!
I never used to use Instagram for blog post marketing because Instagram allows links in very few places. However, the new Link feature in Instagram stories is a game changer! You can drive traffic to your blog posts by posting a photo to your story with a Link sticker to your post. Since Stories tend to get decent views, this is now a powerful method to market your blog.
If you have a Google My Business profile, you can publish posts and updates to your page. While these aren’t widely seen, it’s great to have recent work and information on your Google profile when someone finds you. I have an entire blog post about how to use Google My Business for your creative business on my blog!
If you have an email list, you might want to send an email to your subscribers about your latest post! This marketing method is great for educational content or evergreen posts. Your email list tends to be a very engaged audience, so be sure to leverage this option every once in a while!
Another great option for evergreen or educational content is to link it in your emails to clients. For example, after a new wedding photography client books with me, I send them an email with links to all of my blog posts about wedding planning! Not only do they appreciate the
Comb back through old blog posts and determine if you could create a backlink to your new post elsewhere. This greatly improves your SEO and creates opportunities for users to spend more time on your site. This is really useful for educational content. You can create a string of helpful posts that keep users clicking through your site.
In the end, market your blog posts somewhere to help drive traffic to your blog. You can use all of these methods or mix and match as you see fit for each post.
